OneJax is deeply honored to receive the Outstanding Community Organization Award at the inaugural Unity Classic, an event embodying unity, hope, and the unbreakable spirit of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). This recognition, presented during a week marked by both meaningful celebration and unsettling threats toward HBCUs nationwide, affirms OneJax’s mission to foster respect, understanding, and connection across differences in our city and beyond.

The Outstanding Community Organization Award is a testament to OneJax’s commitment to building bridges among people of all backgrounds.  The Unity Classic is not just another football game, it is a living symbol of hope in the face of despair, civility in the face of discord, and togetherness in the face of hate. OneJax stands in solidarity with HBCUs and community leaders striving toward these ideals.

“Our mission is founded on the conviction that unity, civility, and our common humanity possess the strength to transcend division and animosity,” stated Elizabeth Andersen, CEO of OneJax. She expressed that, “Receiving this award during the Unity Classic deepens our resolve to build bridges across differences. In a time when threats seek to divide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to creating a community rooted in respect, understanding, and shared purpose.”

At the Edward Waters University President’s Reception and Luncheon, our team was inspired by stories of resilience from Edward Waters University and Virginia Union University, institutions that continue to uplift communities despite adversity. Edward Waters University President and CEO A. Zachary Faison shared an African proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone. But if you want to go far, go together.” This message echoes the core of our organizational vision—to go farther, together, for the good of all.

This year’s Unity Classic took place amid a troubling wave of threats targeting multiple HBCUs across several states, including Florida and Virginia, following the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk. While federal officials have not established a direct link between the threats and the shooting, the heightened climate of hostility, fear, and pain touches the nation as a whole. These events serve as a reminder of the urgent need for all of us to come together to foster civil discourse, shared purpose, and healing at a time when unity is more vital than ever.

OneJax has a long history of standing against cycles of hate and violence, emphasizing the power of patient listening and compassion over outrage. The Unity Classic exemplifies what is possible when institutions and organizations choose partnership, perseverance, and faith over fear and division. As Edward Waters University President Faison has expressed, this celebration serves as a powerful reminder that unity is stronger than division, community is stronger than chaos, and above all, love is stronger than hatred.

OneJax is proud to move forward, not as an isolated group, but as an ally and partner with those advancing education, honoring resilience, and demonstrating every day that we can go farther when we go together.

OneJax warmly congratulates Edward Waters University on their well-earned victory at the Unity Classic. Their triumph on the field reflects the same perseverance, unity, and spirit of excellence that inspire their leadership off the field. Above all, we are deeply grateful for the honor of receiving the Outstanding Community Organization Award at this historic celebration and for the opportunity to continue walking in partnership toward a brighter, more hopeful future.
